On Sunday 5th September 2009 WAC hosted their “Young Athletes' Open Championship 2009”, one of Surrey’s largest pre 2012 Olympic athletics events. The day consisted of around 600 athletes competing in various track and field events at the Sheerwater Athletics Track, watched by hundreds of spectators. All of the people that helped to make the day a success were volunteers, many of them vinvolved members, who gave up their day and were dedicated enough to come early and stay late.
Volunteers helped in all aspects of the day from running the car park, selling programs, setting up marquees, serving refreshments, recording scores, running the sound system, racking the sand and marshalling the events. We are very proud of everyone that volunteered to make the day a success and for the support of WAC and their full time volunteer coordinator Sally Taylorson.
While events like these are fantastic, they do only happen a couple of times a year. The rest of the year athletes train regularly with WAC preparing for such events. WAC are always very keen to work with volunteers and to offer them a chance to work alongside qualified coaches. For anyone willing to give up a day a week for a year’s commitment they get the chance to become a qualified coach or umpire.
A couple of vinvolved’s volunteers have taken up the opportunity and are enjoying themselves. If however you are not interested in becoming qualified then there are still opportunities for volunteers to help with the general running of the club. It’s a great friendly club where you get to meet new people and take your interests further.
