Reporting our latest efforts!

We’ve captured some great stories of some of the voluntary activity that has been going on in and around Surrey over the past few months! Often these stories appear in the local Newspaper - or after one occasion, the national paper - so we think what our volunteers do is newsworthy!

If you have volunteered recently on a project or a placement you are currently in, we would love to know your story, so send it in and let others know what you are doing!

Allow yourself to get inspired, enthused, and energized as you read where other young people have been involved doing favours!

MP Philip Hammond from Runnymede meets Surrey vinvolved at The Hub!

On Friday 16 October, Surrey vinvolved had the opportunity to meet with local Conservative MP Philip Hammond (Member of Parliament for Runnymede & Weybridge, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury) in his local constituency in Runnymede to see youth volunteering in action.

A group of Surrey vinvolved volunteers met Mr Hammond, whilst painting a wall of artwork, designed by young volunteers, for the new facility at The Hub, based in Chertsey. The Hub, (formally Chertsey Youth Centre) has undergone 8 months of renovation work and will be opened to reach out to the outer edges of the local community in Chertsey. Meeting staff from Surrey vinvolved, Mr Hammond was made aware of the importance of the volunteering charity and the youth-led action that is happening within Surrey, and how young people are passionately getting involved to make a difference for others.

Young volunteers from Surrey vinvolved and CORE Youth spoke with Mr Hammond about the importance of youth volunteering, the way it has had an impact on their lives and the skills they have gained through it. Esther Nash, Leader for CORE Youth said, “We’ve had over 25 of our CORE youth involved with The Hub’s renovation work for the past 6 months, painting throughout the summer, learning woodwork and electrics over the weekends, and tirelessly working alongside other adults, learning skills and making a difference. They are excited about the new home it will be for them, with the opportunities to hang out in a great café, get involved in games and sports, meet new people and have play in the live band.”

From meeting at The Hub, Mr Hammond was able to see current youth action, as well as hear about the proposed youth projects and engaging community activities that will take effect in the New Year. The Hub is a fine example where future youth action will take place and where presently, the building stands as testament where volunteers, young and old, have worked together giving hours of their time to the renovation work!

In addition to the volunteering, Esther Nash was reported in vinspired’s recognition article published in The Times Newspaper on Friday 13 November for her volunteering with CORE Youth.
